Christmas Wedding Bells For Cochyn
Congratulations to 2nd Tenor Mike Brown who married his gorgeous bride Victoria on December 19th.  It could not have been a more perfect winter wedding; bright sunshine, crisp snow on the ground and the sweet sounds of the Gwalia chiming through the picture-postcard village of Oundle.  It was an honour and a pleasure for the choir to be invited to add a little Welsh flavour to this perfect cross-border union set in icing-sugar coated Northants.  On an emotional day the choir set the tone perfectly with a passionate Rachie and a moving rendition of The Rose before raising a smile with a high-tempo'd Rhythm of Life and the wonderfully apt hymn Oh Happy Day.  With the vocal chords (and ties) loosened by some mulled wine, it was then time to lead the congregation in some stirring carols, with Mike, Victoria and guests taking centre stage in a rousing O Come All Ye Faithful.  The bridal family's descant verse was as good a case as we have heard to start a soprano section in the choir!  Being a part of such a perfect day will be a cherished memory for all choristers (that were still sober enough by the end to remember).

Victoria's father paid this generous tribute to the choir:

"The singing added a new dimension to the occasion and made the wedding even more memorable. The wedding guests have all said that the music of the choir was very special and the opportunity to sing alongside them was much appreciated. The friendliness and informality of the choir was ideal for the occasion and made for a very happy atmosphere for the whole event. In fact the Vicar said that after very many years of conducting weddings, this one was the best in which  he has been involved  !!!"

Gwalia Launch Big Plans for 2010
The new decade is off to a bang as the Gwalia members have defied the snow to start practice for a big year of competition and concerts.  Building on the strength brought by a number of new members, the Gwalia are looking forward to taking these rookies to their first singing competition in Bedford in March.  There are also a number of concerts with old and new friends to look forward to and the prospect of trips to Norwich, West Wales and Cornwall look certain to continue the choir's reputation for great fun as well as great singing.

Successful trip to Antwerp
The choir had a very enjoyable weekend in Antwerp recently - Nov. 6th to 8th - where we gave a joint concert with a mandolin orchestra called "La Napolitaine" - their website is at:- www.mandolin.be The concert was held in St. Anthony's Church - Edegem - a suburb of Antwerp. It was extremely interesting and enjoyable to listen to the mandolins and to be accompanied by them in a number of traditional Welsh songs such as Myfanwy and Cwm Rhondda. We travelled by Eurostar to Brussels and then on by local train to Antwerp. Antwerp Central railway station is magnificent. It has been described as the "Railway Cathedral" and it fully deserves this description. For pictures of Antwerp Central station, go to:- http://www.aviewoncities.com/gallery/antwerp/centralstation.htm We visited other main tourist attractions such as the Cathedral and some traditional Belgian taverns such as the "Pelgrom" in Pelgrimstraat which has an enormous range of strong Belgian beers. Altogether a very successful and enjoyable trip!

40 years singing with the Gwalia
Hearty congratulations to Bryan Howells (2nd tenor) who has now been singing with the Gwalia for forty years. Bryan joined the choir in the autumn of 1969 - just after the first Moon landing! Bryan is our longest serving member and we hope he remains with us for many more years to come.
